Mimecast Email Security

Mimecast provides advanced features to help you manage emails securely. With these features, you can manage held emails, release and reject emails, and manage your permitted and blocked sender lists. The features are available via the Daily Digest Notifications or on your Mimecast Personal Portal. Use your NetID and password to access your Mimecast Personal Portal.

Daily Digest Notifications

Mimecast automatically sends users a daily digest email summarizing any messages currently held in their spam queue. From within that email, users can release, block, or permit messages with a single click if they do not wish to access their Personal Portal. The email will also have a link to the Mimecast Personal Portal.

The following sections provide the steps for managing held, bounced, rejected emails, and blocked and permitted sender lists.

How to Manage Held Messages

You can access your held message queue and take action on messages from your personal portal. Messages are sometimes held based on security policies designed to prevent unwanted emails from reaching your inbox. The Personal On Hold viewer lets you view held emails and decide whether to release or reject them.

Messages can be released or rejected either individually or in bulk. Messages are automatically removed if you do not release or reject them from the Hold queue within 14 days.

To view and release held messages:

Log on to your personal portal.

Release Email

• The email is removed from the viewer and is delivered to your Inbox.
• Future emails from the sender may be held.

Release Email & Permit Address

• The message is removed from the viewer and is delivered to your Inbox.
• A Permitted Senders Policy is created for the sender's email address, meaning future messages from the sender are delivered straight to your Inbox.

Release Email & Permit Domain

• The message is removed from the viewer and is delivered to your Inbox.
• A Permitted Senders Policy is created for the sender's domain, meaning future messages are delivered straight to your Inbox.

How to Manage Bounced Messages

Bounced messages are inbound or outbound messages that Mimecast has accepted, but cannot deliver to the recipient's mail server. When this occurs, a notification is sent to the sender.

You can display the message in the Bounce viewer. This provides information about messages that Mimecast was unable to deliver. This can be useful to determine why it did not reach the intended recipient. The actual content of the bounced messages will not be shown.

To view bounced messages:

Log on to your personal portal.

Click on a message to view its properties.

Note: Bounced messages (both outbound and inbound) are still available in the Mimecast archive. This is due to the message originally being accepted by Mimecast before the delivery attempts took place. The bounce information, however, is only available for one month in the bounce viewer.

How to Manage Rejected Messages

Rejected messages are messages sent to you that Mimecast has rejected. This generally applies to inbound emails. When a message is rejected, the sender is notified.

The Rejection viewer can display information about why Mimecast rejected it. If the message was legitimate, you could use this information to address the cause of the rejection and allow the message through on the next send attempt.

Note: With rejected messages, the email data has yet to be accepted by Mimecast, so the message cannot be retrieved. The original sender must resend it.

To view the properties of rejected messages:

Log on to your personal portal.

Click on the Advanced icon in the navigation menu.

Click on the Rejected Messages menu item.
Information on rejected messages is retained for seven days, but only the current day's rejections are displayed by default.

If required, you can filter the list of messages by typing into the Filter toolbar field.

Click on a message to view its properties.

Rejecting a Message

You can reject a message by using the following steps:

Log on to your personal portal.

In the late 1990s, a group of faculty members at 91°µÍř posed a question: What would happen if students who were interested in becoming teachers were put into a cohort for their freshman and sophomore years — helping each other with coursework, gaining experience outside the classroom and experiencing what it’s like to be an educator before really being at the head of a class?

By 2001, that query was the basis of a grant, implemented by Northeastern alumnus and Instructor of Communication, Media and Theatre (CMT) Jim Blair (M.A. ’68 English - Literature). The project, then called the Illinois Professional Learners Partnership (IPLP), was housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, and partnered with the Daniel L. Goodwin College of Education.

IPLP was composed of five Illinois public and private universities, seven community colleges, educational agencies and five businesses including IBM and Ameritech. Its three major goals centered on collaborative reflection, professional preparation and plans to manage the organizational change process in teacher education reform.

Over the years, the program became known as the College of Arts and Sciences Education Program (CASEP). This academic year, CASEP marks its 25th year as part of the University. An anniversary celebration was held on May 1, 2026, in the Angelina Pedroso Center for Diversity and Intercultural Affairs. Current and former students, faculty and staff gathered to recognize this momentous occasion.

During the event, Blair noted he was inspired to start the program because of the experience he had at Northeastern as a student. When he came to Northeastern in 1965, he took a transformative creative writing class with the Pulitzer Prize winning poet Gwendolyn Brooks. In that class, he not only learned the subject matter, but he met his wife, Margaret Blair, as well as Harry Hild, who would later become Jim’s Department Chair of CMT once he began teaching at the University.

“It was an incredible experience,” Jim said. “Gwendoyn Brooks was able to impart a kind of teaching and the kind of courage teachers need to have. She gave that to me.”

Brooks’ supportive nature and encouragement to just try to do assignments, even if Jim didn’t feel he was ready, helped him discover the kind of teacher he wanted to be, and that he wanted to share that inspiration with others.

Northeastern President Katrina E. Bell-Jordan, Ph.D., served as IPLP’s first student recruitment coordinator.

“We didn't really know what we were looking for in terms of students, but knew we were looking for students who were hungry to do something different, and who wanted to engage in a very interactive and unique way with their teachers,” President Bell-Jordan said. “The faculty went above and beyond in the classroom, testing out this wonderful experiment.”

President Bell-Jordan noted that Jim is a “trailblazer” and thanked him, Marge, and their daughter, Jennifer Blair — who is also an alumna of the University and currently serves Northeastern as a Senior Program Specialist for Nontraditional Degree Programs — for their continued contributions and support of the University. Furthermore, she shared the results of CASEP speak for themselves. In a 2012 Program Review, the four-year graduation rate for Northeastern students overall was 5.3% and the six-year graduation rate was 23.1%. Students enrolled in the CASEP Program graduated at a rate of 25% and 58.3%, respectively.

Not only has the program guided countless students through Northeastern’s academic curriculum to graduation, but also confidently prepared them to lead their own classes. Additionally, CASEP has been a model for student success and retention, as well as the basis for the University’s Living Learning Communities, which offer holistic educational opportunities for students who wish to live at The Nest, Northeastern’s residence hall.

“Former provosts have recognized the importance of resourcing and funding CASEP because outcomes were so strong,” Dr. Bell-Jordan said. She continued, “Jim was fearless and committed, innovative and inspirational. He never forgot to center the student and the experience we wanted the students to have.”

Northeastern Director of the First-Year Experience program and former CASEP Director Jeremy Babcock emceed the event, which also honored two current CASEP students — Sergio Santoyo-Rodriguez and Mihaela Papucharova for their involvement in the program.

Additionally, current CASEP Director Jennifer Hasso shared that the CASEP acronym is being revised and will now stand for the College of Arts and Sciences Education Plus program. By expanding the idea of what an educator is, beyond traditional teachers to include students interested in related fields, such as social work, psychology, school counseling, administrators, and informal educational spaces like museums and nonprofits, CASEP can extend its impact even further.

“We wanted to be inclusive and expand the idea of who an educator is and who they serve,” Hasso said. “If you're willing to serve people, and if you want to go into some sort of education-focused area, if you're a curious person, if you're an explorer, then we will help you with open arms. We're also just really happy to continue this work.”

Incoming freshman students interested in becoming a part of CASEP need to apply after they’ve been admitted to the University. Applications for the Fall 2026 cohort are now open. Visit the CASEP webpage for more information and to apply.

Refreshments will also be provided.

“My hope is that Pride Fest reminds everyone that 91°µÍř is a place where people can show up as their full selves and feel welcomed,” Cortez said. “It will be a fun and casual opportunity to celebrate Pride, build community, and highlight the resources available to support our students.”

It also offers an opportunity to reflect on and learn about the community’s history without social stigma.

91°µÍř held an Employee Excellence and Years of Service Awards ceremony on Thursday, May 28, 2026, in Alumni Hall on the Main Campus.

The celebration recognized the contributions of Administrative and Professional (A&P) and Civil Service employees to the University. It also recognized employees for reaching milestone years of service in five year increments, with one employee being recognized for 35 years of employment at Northeastern.

“The Employee Excellence and Years of Services Awards gives us an opportunity to come together and appreciate one another and the support that we continue to try to give to one another in lifting up this University,” President Katrina E. Bell-Jordan, Ph.D., said. “Through the successes, the changes and the growth, through it all, our employees have stayed the course and continued to contribute with genuine good cheer in ways that move the University forward.”

More than 160 faculty, staff and administrators were recognized for their years of service during the ceremony.

The Employee Excellence Awards Program was established in 2012 to acknowledge, honor and award A&P and Civil Service employees whose contributions have had a significant impact in helping achieve the University’s objectives. Nominations were submitted by employees and students, then reviewed by a committee of employees from units across the University. Awards are given based on demonstrated excellence in three award categories:
